TACTIC VMware Image Setup and Install

The TACTIC VMware Image provides an easy way to use the powerful TACTIC platform on Windows or Linux.
Utilizing the VMware Player for Windows or Linux, TACTIC VMware Image allows you to run a virtual machine on your
existing operating system.

Q. Will my computer be adversely affected if I run the Vm?
A. No. Aside from unzipping into a really big (5+Gig) folder, there is absolutely no way for the TACTIC virtual machine and your host machine to directly affect each other. At the end of the evaluation period, you can either continue using the TSI for production, migrate the data to a new full server install or simply delete the VM Image's directory.
Note: This will destroy all evaluation data entered into Tactic

What you Need

Download VMware Player
The VMware player is a license-free player that you can download from
While VMware currently supports Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7, and many flavors of Linux, we chose Fedora for the virtual machine to streamline the evaluation process.
Web Browser

We recommend that you use Mozilla Firefox as your web browser to access TACTIC.
Login Info
There are three sets of login info to remember:
VM Linux user
user: root
password: south123paw
user: admin
password: tactic
Windows Samba share
user: apache
password: south123paw
Starting Up the VM Image

On starting up VMware Player, you will see an Option to load a Virtual Machine. Click on it.
When prompted with the Open dialog, navigate to where you unzipped the VM Image. Open the SouthpawTech Tactic TSI.vmx file. The TSI will start up in the VMware Player.

When you first start the VM Image, you will be presented with a dialog, asking whether the virtual machine was moved or copied.
Click on the "I copied it" button.
Lines of start-up message should scroll by after the Linux kernel boots in the VM window.
Once the bootup is complete, you will be presented with this prompt:

This means that VM Image has started up correctly. If there is no IP address (e.g. presented in the prompt, the
virtual machine has not picked up an IP address from a DHCP server. Contact your IT department to rectify this. (Refer to
the Troubleshooting section)
If there is an IP address, and/or a name other than "localhost.localdomain", write it down because we will need it in a moment.

TACTIC Quick start

Install the License

1. To leave the VMware Player window, press Cltr+Alt.
2. In your host machine, start up Firefox.
3. Retrieve the IP address/hostname that you made note of from the VM window and enter the full URL in Firefox:
        http://<insert IP/Hostname here>/tactic/admin

4. Enter “admin” as user name, “tactic” as the password.

Setup the TACTIC Config.
The TACTIC Config file is where the root paths and other base system settings are stored. To edit this file in the VM, login as root and edit the file:
You can also access this through the System Info page Global > System Info
In this file, you will see a section similar to the one below. At the moment, the important option to set is:
win32_client_repo_dir and linux_client_repo_dir
For More information regarding the TACTIC Config file, Please refer to the TACTIC documentation in System Administrator -> TACTIC Configuration File

If you choose to create a new project in the system, it is necessary to restart the TACTIC service after doing so. To restart TACTIC, login as root and run the command:
service tactic restart

Security Notes

For ease of use the VM Image comes with easy-to-guess passwords, and a Samba share. Your IT department must be aware
of this, as there can be security issues.

1. The IP address does not show up on starting up the VM Image.
It is possible that an IP address fails to be assigned if your host machine is not connected to a network or you have special configuration on your network.
In the top right corner of your VMware player, click on the down arrow beside the Ethernet button and choose host-only , NAT, or bridged. Make sure the 'Connected' menu item is checked.
In the top right corner of your VMware player, right-click on the Ethernet button and choose host-only, NAT, or bridged. Make sure the 'Connected' menu item is checked.
General guideline
• Network with DHCP: bridged
• Network without DHCP: NAT
• No network: host-only
If the problem persists, please refer to the VMware Player documentation by pressing F1.
2. I do not remember the IP address of the VMware virtual machine.
In the VMware player, run the following command in the shell:

The IP is the inet address, e.g.
Refreshing the IP Address
If you change the Ethernet settings, you may need to restart the network card in the VM. To do so, you will need to know the number for it. If you run the command ifconfig in the VM shell, you should see a name similar to "eth14". To restart eth14, run the following commands:
ifdown eth14
ifup eth14

3. I get the following error in my browser:
Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request /POST /tactic/admin/ < *Error reading from remote server
This means the TACTIC service has stopped. If you are running other processes on port 80 for example Skype, this can cause a problem with the Tactic service. To resolve this, stop the conflicting service and then start Tactic in the VM. To restart Tactic, login as root and run the command:
service tactic start
